Racism is a problem.
We are part of racism.
Racism can be resisted.
Racism is part of how we have built society –part of how political, social and economic relationships are maintained.Racism is also a powerful word. To describe something, or someone, as racist is socially significant. But what if we are part of a system which is racist, with different outcomes for people based on race? What if institutions, traditions and memories that we love reinforce and recreate racism?
QCEA’s new book, Race and Privilege in Europe, seeks to explore these questions. Reading this book might be an early step in seeing racism afresh, and better understanding the relationship between race and privilege. However uncomfortable, an understanding of racism is necessary for any who seek community, justice and equality.
